Back Bay water main break shuts down area of Commonwealth Avenue

Six nearby buildings that experienced flooding in basements were evacuated, but no one was injured.

Authorities are asking drivers and pedestrians to avoid a portion of Commonwealth Avenue Tuesday morning after a water main break flooded the area and forced evacuations from nearby buildings.The break occurred Monday night around 9:40 p.m. at Comm. Ave. and Exeter Street, according to the Boston Fire Department. Six nearby buildings that experienced flooding in basements were evacuated, but no one was injured.

According to Boston fire, the water started to recede around 11 p.m.

Boston police said Tuesday morning that Comm. Ave. remained closed to drivers and pedestrians from Dartmouth to Exeter Street.

The Boston Water and Sewer Department continued to work at the scene early Tuesday.

“Motorists are being redirected to Beacon St for access to Kenmore. Comm Ave inbound is open from Massachusetts Avenue to the Public Gardens,” police said.
