Newton man allegedly attacked elderly cab driver in Logan Airport road rage incident

A Newton man was arrested Friday morning after allegedly attacking an 86-year-old taxi driver in a road rage incident near Logan International Airport, according to State Police.
Nicholas Franco, 66, of Newton Center, got out of a 2016 Mercedes and began arguing with a cab driver stopped at a red light on Harborside Drive, State Police said, citing video surveillance and accounts of the victim and witnesses.
After the driver got out of the cab, Franco pulled off the man’s glasses, pushed him to the ground, and struck him in the torso before driving away, according to State Police. The victim was taken Mass General Hospital for a medical evaluation.
Franco was arrested in East Boston at about 9:10 a.m., shortly after the incident, according to State Police.
He was arraigned in East Boston District Court Friday afternoon on a charge of assault and battery on an elderly person, according to Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk Country District Attorney’s office.
Franco was released on his own recognizance and ordered to return to court February 26, Wark said in an e-mail.
