Police in Connecticut began searching for Maldonado on Tuesday after officers responded to a report of a woman covered in blood, yelling and banging on doors in the area of 77 Natick St. in Hartford early that morning.
Police said an investigation revealed that Maldonado had stabbed the Hartford woman at least 30 times in a vehicle before fleeing the scene with her 6-year-old son, who was allegedly in the car during the assault.
The boy was immediately reported as missing and endangered, and he was found around 5:30 a.m Tuesday in Worcester, Massachusetts, wandering alone on Providence Street. Hartford police said Worcester officers found a bladed weapon in the vehicle that was connected to the attack nearby.
Maldonado, who police say has previous arrests for domestic violence, is being held in New York as a fugitive from justice, but is facing several charges in Connecticut including attempted murder, kidnapping, and assault.
The boy remains in the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, and his mother is in critical but stable condition, according to police. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
