63-year-old woman dies after breaking up family fight at Methuen home, authorities say

A 23-year-old is facing charges in connection with the incident.

Authorities are investigating after a 63-year-old woman died Sunday night following her attempt to break up a fight between family members at a Methuen home. Methuen police responded to the home on Bicknell Avenue late Sunday night to reports of a family fight and an unresponsive woman, according to the Essex District Attorney’s office. Authorities said Martina Gomez, 63, was trying to stop the altercation when she appeared to suffer from medical distress. She was transported to Lawrence General Hospital where she later died. Modesta Gomez, 23, was arrested and charged with assault and battery on a person over the age of 60 and assault and battery. The DA’s office said she would be arraigned Monday in Lawrence District Court in connection to the assault of Martina Gomez and another unnamed woman. The incident remains under investigation, and prosecutors said an autopsy will be performed on the 63-year-old on Monday to determine the cause and manner of her death.
