Man shot, arrested for New Salem attack on trooper held on $1 million bail ahead of arraignment
Both men were in stable condition Sunday, and the trooper was in "good spirits," a Massachusetts State Police spokesman said.
The 18-year-old Manchester, New Hampshire, man who police say stabbed a state trooper and was shot in a violent confrontation following a motor vehicle chase that ended with a crash in New Salem, Massachusetts, is being held on $1 million bail ahead of his pending arraignment this week, according to Massachusetts State Police.
Nghia Le, who was shot in the chest after he allegedly stabbed the trooper multiple times with a knife in the head, face, shoulder, and arm Friday, is facing charges of armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, state police spokesman David Procopio said in a statement.
Le and the 47-year-old trooper, who has not been identified, remained hospitalized at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester Sunday evening. Both were in stable condition, Procopio said, adding that the trooper was in “good spirits.”
Authorities said Friday’s lengthy chase started around noon in Walpole, New Hampshire, after Le was in a motor vehicle crash and allegedly stole the vehicle of the other driver involved in the collision.
Police pursued Le into Vermont and then into Massachusetts as he drove down Interstate 91 before heading onto Route 2, officials said. Officers chased him until his eventual crash at the intersection of Route 202 and Fay Road in New Salem.
There, Le allegedly exited his car and stabbed the trooper before he was shot “in response to his attack,” Procopio said.
Although a specific date has not been set, Procopio said Le was expected to be arraigned early this week. A location was also yet to be determined.
