World War II shell found in Gloucester basement

The woman who made the discovery wasn’t taking any chances, so she called in the police.

When a Rockland woman decided to clean the basement of her her mother’s Gloucester home, she found a World War II-era tank shell among the items on her father’s workbench.The woman wasn’t taking any chances, so she called in the Gloucester Police Department. The State Police Bomb Squad was also brought in to take a look, according to a news release

Technicians determined that the shell was inert and did not pose any danger, according to the release.

“There were no massive evacuations,” said John Guilfoil, a department spokesman.

The woman’s mother is 86 and her father has passed away, according to the release. Guilfoil noted that the woman’s father was a World War II veteran, but didn’t have further details on how the shell got there.

The 75mm shell was one of the primary rounds used by American tanks during World War II, according to Guilfoil.
