Man dies in early morning crash on the Mass. Pike in Charlton
Police believe the man didn't notice that traffic had stopped for construction.
An early morning crash on the Mass. Pike westbound in Charlton claimed the life of a Springfield man.Police say the 51-year-old man’s Ford Transit van struck the back of a tractor-trailer, which was stopped for construction. The crash happened around 3:40 a.m. Thursday, according to state police. The truck was stopped in the middle of the highway just before Exit 9 due to the roadway being temporarily closed, police said. The van driver reportedly hit the back of the truck, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not hurt. The victim has not been publicly identified as authorities were in the process of contacting his family.Police believe the van driver was traveling “at highway speed” and didn’t notice traffic had stopped. They are continuing to investigate.
