Mattapan resident in ‘critical condition’ following fire
The two-alarm fire was contained to the first floor of the Rainier Road home.
The Mattapan fire that left a resident in critical condition Monday night was caused by a short circuit on the first floor, according to fire officials.
“It originated in the first-floor bedroom,” said Boston firefighter Marc Sanders.
The Boston Fire Department rang a second alarm after responding to 7/9 Rainier Road at roughly 9:44 p.m., according to a tweet from the department.

Four residents were displaced by the blaze, fire officials said. No one else was injured, and the fire was reportedly contained within an hour.
The woman listed as critical is said to be in her 60s, according to Sanders. He said it was her bedroom that the fire started in.

The fire gutted the first floor of the home, and firefighters were able to contain it to that level. Photos from the scene show charred remains of what appears to be a dresser inside the home. The department believes the blaze caused about $50,000 of damages.
The home can be saved, Sanders said.
“They did a great job containing it to the first floor,” he said.
