Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney John Pappas will serve out the rest of current District Attorney Dan Conley’s term, per appointment by Gov. Charlie Baker.
Pappas has served as a prosecutor in the county for roughly 24 years and on Conley’s chief trial counsel since 2011, according to a news release.
He will lead the office after Conley moves on to his new job in the private sector as a special counsel for law firm Mintz Levin and senior adviser for ML Strategies LLC, the firm’s lobbying arm, on Thursday.
Pappas’s leadership will be short lived as residents will elect a new district attorney this fall.
Democrat Rachael Rollins, a former federal prosecutor and lawyer for MBTA and Massport, will face Mike Malone, an independent candidate, in the general election.
Conley praised the governor’s choice.
“John Pappas worked his way up from attending law school at night to supervising more than 150 lawyers responsible for tens of thousands of cases each year,” he said in a statement. “He’s served the people of Suffolk County at every level of the office.”
