A state trooper and two paramedics, who helped deliver a baby on the side of a highway in Somerville this past June, were reunited with the little girl last Thursday, according to a post from the Massachusetts State Police. While on duty at state police’s Medford barracks the morning of June 20, Trooper Karl Johnson was alerted to a woman who had gone into labor while en route to a Boston hospital, police said. As a result, her husband had pulled over on McGrath Highway at Puritan Road.

When Johnson arrived at the scene, he helped deliver the baby girl, and made sure the infant’s airways were clear following, police said.

Shortly after, Cataldo paramedics Sean Byron and Cristine Janiak arrived and took over the baby’s care. The pair also administered medical assistance during transport to Massachusetts General Hospital, according to police.

The new parents, Bo and Yishu Wang, brought their newborn daughter, Alyssa, to the barracks last Thursday to thank the first responders for their help that morning, police said.

“Alyssa and her mom are doing fantastic, and Yishu reported that she became something of a celebrity at the hospital as word spread about the details of Alyssa’s roadside birth,” police wrote in the Facebook post.

Johnson and the paramedics gifted Alyssa a pink onesie and bib — both adorned with the MSP logo.

“The best gift of all, however, was for the Trooper and EMTs to get to hold the little girl they brought into the world that memorable morning,” police wrote.
