Police say a Maine resident took in an injured raccoon. It had rabies and started biting.
“As a smart reminder, NEVER take in a wild animal into your home!” police wrote on Facebook.
A Kennebunkport, Maine, resident “inappropriately” took in an injured wild raccoon and was bitten several times by the animal, which turned out to be rabid, according to police.
A responding game warden was also bitten while attempting to remove the “illegally housed” raccoon, police said.
“As a smart reminder, NEVER take in a wild animal into your home!” Kennebunkport police wrote on Facebook. “Wild animals are meant to [be] left alone and remain outdoors.”
Both the resident and game warden will undergo medical treatment for rabies, police said. It was the town’s first confirmed case of rabies this year.
