A drawbridge that spans over the Saugus River between Saugus and Lynn will be closed to vehicular and marine traffic on Monday after it became stuck in the open position following a mechanical issue Sunday evening, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

The Belden G. Bly Bridge, which is also called the Fox Hill Drawbridge, was closed after the bridge operator reported the bridge was stuck at approximately 5:40 p.m., MassDOT officials said in a statement.

Officials found a problem with a steel rope that is used to operate the bridge and cited an underway engineering evaluation, the time it will take to stabilize the draw span, and making repairs as cause for keeping the bridge closed on Monday.

Summer Street, Lincoln Avenue, Ballard Street, and Boston Street will serve as detour routes, and MBTA buses that use the bridge will use the detours, according to MassDOT.

Officials said the bridge regularly gets maintenance.

Design plans for an estimated $80-million project to replace the bridge are almost complete, “and the project is expected to be advertised for construction bids in early 2019.’’

It was unclear Sunday night when the bridge will reopen.
