Downpours cause flooding, beach erosion along Cape
There were around 1,500 people without power in the Eastham area as of 10:30 p.m.
Torrential rain along the Outer Cape caused roadway flooding, beach erosion, and power outages in several communities Saturday night, officials said.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Northeastern Barnstable County, which received more than four inches of rain.
“We have several vehicles stuck in the water on different roads scattered throughout town, needing to be towed,’’ Wellfleet police said in a Facebook post.
Police also barred access to Cahoon Hollow Beach, which was the site of a dune collapse last summer.
The Beachcomber restaurant closed early, and fire officials canceled a Bearly Dead show that was scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
The walkway path to Cahoon Hollow Beach “suffered some erosion,’’ Police Chief Ronald Fisette said, but there was no dune collapse.
Damage in the area will be further evaluated overnight into the morning, Fisette said. No injuries were reported.
In Eastham, police cautioned drivers to “obey police cones and barricades that have been set out to close dangerous areas.’’
“Many roads in Eastham have large puddles or have become flooded due to the torrential rain this evening,’’ police wrote in a Facebook post.
Police also closed off access to Thumpertown Beach.
There were around 1,500 people without power in the Eastham area as of 10:30 p.m., according to Eversource, and dozens more scattered along the Cape.
