A Yarmouth detective was stuck with a used syringe during a heroin bust
Six people were charged after the incident.
A Yarmouth police detective was stuck with a used syringe as authorities raided an Amelia Way rental property for heroin this week. The bust resulted in charges against six people.Authorities arrested Euclides Matias, 31, of Boston, and Michael Geggatt, 28, Timothy Daffinee, 32, Michael Santos, 29, and Zachary Tuers, 29, all of Yarmouth, and issued Paulina Gontarz, 26, of Yarmouth, a summons after finding heroin, $1,601 in cash, and a large amount of syringes, drug paraphernalia, and other heroin-related objects in the house, a Yarmouth Police Department press release said.Authorities stopped a Chevrolet SUV on nearby Autumn Way at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Police found a small bag of heroin in the vehicle before learning that a wanted person was inside the 12 Amelia Way home, the release said.Officers at the home arrested Geggatt — wanted on shoplifting and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license warrants — and saw the drugs and equipment in plain view, as well as Santos in the process of using heroin with a syringe, police said.“Yarmouth Police Department detectives arrived at the home and during a search of one of the rooms, detectives and police officers observed Timothy Daffinee sitting on the floor of the bedroom and an unknown male at the door,” police said.“Seconds after opening the bedroom door, the male slammed the door on a detective striking him,” authorities continued. “The male subject then jumped onto the bed in an attempt to get away.”A K9 unit assisted officers and the detective, who was also stuck with a hypodermic needle during the attack, according to police.He was later brought to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment “for this infectious exposure,” police said.Police arrested Daffinee, who was charged with heroin possession, and Matias, identified as the unknown male, who was also found with approximately 32 grams of heroin during a search, according to authorities.Matias faces charges of assault and battery while armed with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and trafficking in 18 to 36 grams of heroin/morphine/opium, police said. He was also wanted on a warrant for fentanyl possession on a subsequent offense.Santos was charged with heroin possession, and Tuers was wanted on five warrants: heroin possession, carrying a dangerous weapon, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash with property damage, and two for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, police said.Gontarz was summonsed for heroin possession, according to authorities.“The Town of Yarmouth has been notified of the rental property at 12 Amelia Way and will conduct a follow-up and review of licensing and sanitary conditions,” police said.The five men arrested were scheduled to be arraigned in Barnstable District Court Thursday morning.
