Corrections officer pleads guilty to scheme to smuggle opioids for inmate

The officer had previously smuggled other contraband for the involved inmate, authorities said.

A corrections officer for the Massachusetts Correctional Institute facility in Norfolk pleaded guilty Wednesday to a conspiracy to smuggle opioids into the prison for an inmate, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s office. William Holts, 51, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, had previously smuggled other contraband for the involved inmate when, beginning around April 30, 2018, he expressed a willingness to illegally transfer Suboxone strips into the facility in exchange for cash, authorities said. In a series of recorded calls, Holts arranged a meeting outside of the correctional facility to obtain over 100 Suboxone strips — a controlled substance used to treat heroin addiction — in exchange for $2,000 in cash, according to authorities.Holts was charged and arrested for the crime early this past May. He is scheduled to be sentenced in September.
