13-year-old boy dies after being pulled from Worcester pond
Police say the teen was under water for about 15 minutes before he was found.
A 13-year-old boy died early Thursday morning, hours after he was pulled from a Worcester pond. Worcester police said officers responded to Bell Pond around 8 p.m. on Wednesday for a report of a distressed swimmer. Upon their arrival at the scene, people yelled that there was a boy missing in the water. Several people were already searching for him.An officer formed a water search line with the people at the scene, but they were unable to locate the teen.After arriving at the pond, the Worcester Fire Scuba Team found the 13-year-old within three and half minutes in about 12 feet of water, 69 feet away from the beach. It is estimated the boy was under water for about 15 minutes, police said. The boy was rushed to UMass Medical Center, where his pulse and breathing were restored, according to police. But detectives were informed early Thursday that the teen from Worcester passed away around 2:50 a.m. Police said there were four lifeguards working at the beach Wednesday until their shift ended at 7 p.m. “Prior to leaving, signs were posted that the beach was closed for the remainder of the day,” the department said. “In addition to posting the signs, lifeguards remove all persons in the water and explain that the beach is closed.”An investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said.
