It was a-moose-ing, to say the least.

In an attempt to set a Guinness World Record, more than 1,600 people belched out their best moose call in chorus for at least 30 seconds on Saturday at a moose festival in Maine.

“I’m an old moose caller and an old moose man and it was pretty gratifying,’’ said Roger Lambert, who led the call at the three-day Skowhegan Moose Festival, in a phone interview with the Globe on Sunday.

Once Guinness said it was interested in the idea, Lambert said, it gave the moose fanatics the requirements to set the record.

At least 995 people had to attempt the call, according to the festival’s Facebook page. It also had to be continuous for 30 seconds, Lambert said.

Lambert said there were 1,600 wristbands, which were all distributed, to help count people at the call. Cameras were also set up. He estimated there were more than 2,000 people who attempted the moose call record.

Guinness may take up to three months in verifying the record attempt, Lambert said. However, he is confident it was successful.

“Moose is pretty big in Maine,’’ he said.
