Congressman: Cranberry industry may face retaliatory tariffs

BOSTON (AP) — Cranberry growers in Massachusetts are worried about potential fallout from President Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

Democratic U.S. Rep. William Keating says cranberries appear on a World Trade Organization list of American products that could face retaliatory tariffs.

Keating’s southeastern Massachusetts district includes many commercial cranberry bogs. He says tariffs would hurt growers by cutting their margins on exports and likely cause domestic prices to rise as well.

Cranberries are the state’s largest food crop and experts say the local industry generates about $1.4 billion in economic activity.

Massachusetts is the second largest producer of cranberries in the U.S., behind Wisconsin.
