Red Line service has resumed after firefighters responded to a fire on the tracks outside Porter Square station, the MBTA said.

“A third rail insulator was smoldering,’’ MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said in an e-mail.

The fire was “quickly extinguished,’’ Pesaturo said.

He added that the situation was “all clear’’ shortly before 11 p.m.

The Cambridge Fire Department and MBTA officials responded to the scene, the MBTA said on its website.

Trains were delayed by more than 30 minutes.
