Police: Woman defends herself, son, with letter opener during Sunderland home invasion

A Sunderland woman defended herself and her son with a letter opener against a knife-wielding man who allegedly broke into her home early Sunday morning, according to police.Sunderland police said officers responded to a report of a breaking and entering in progress at an Old Amherst Road home around 1:40 a.m. A woman at the home had reported that she heard someone break into the house and then hid in a bedroom with her son. The intruder allegedly “rummaged around” and eventually forced his way into the bedroom. “Seeing that the man was armed with a knife and fearing for her and her son’s safety she hit him in his face with a letter opener,” police said in a statement. “Injured, he left the room, but she wasn’t sure if he left the house.”Responding officers found a man matching the description the woman gave to police a few yards away from the home. Donald Walker, 35, of Hadley, was arrested and is facing multiple charges including armed assault in a dwelling, home invasion, breaking and entering, and malicious damage of personal property. Police said Walker is being held on $150,000 bail. Police are asking any residents with information about the incident to contact police.
