Another nor’easter, another bit of history revealed on Nauset Beach.
The Orleans Police Department said Saturday that March’s fourth storm exposed three broken utility poles, which run parallel to where the previously revealed horse and carriage tracks that were discovered on the beach earlier this month.
“Mother Nature has peeled away a little more for those who are interested in our past,” the department wrote. “Like clues at a crime scene, the fragile evidence that is presented — when pieced together like a puzzle — provides a snapshot of our past.”
The department posited that the utility poles could have once supplied power to camps on the outer beach and the Coast Guard Station on Little Pochet, which according to the U.S. Coast Guard was built in 1872-1873.
In addition to the utility poles, some “interesting” carriage tracks also emerged.
“These tracks have marks that are divergent, or perpendicular to the main track,” the department wrote. “Not sure if these are indicative of a work carriage, or perhaps a special wheel that allowed it to “float” over soft sand.”
