Chatham police: Man stole two cars, crashed and abandoned both
A man stole, crashed, and abandoned two cars late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning on Cape Cod, Chatham police said in a Facebook post.
Police identified Joseph Bopp, who has addresses in Chatham and Norwood, as the suspect. Officers arrested the 27-year-old Wednesday morning at around 8:45. Bopp is charged with carjacking, leaving the scene of a crash, assault on a family member, and two counts each of vehicle theft, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license, among several other charges.
Officers responded to a reported disturbance at Bopp’s Chatham address at about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday. A car theft was reported at the address before they arrived. They saw the alleged thief recklessly driving the car into Harwich, but then lost sight of the vehicle. Orleans police found the 1999 Mercury sedan crashed and abandoned on Shoal Lane at around 12:10 a.m.
Chatham police then responded to another crash at Jack Knife Landing near the Chatham-Harwich town line at around 12:38 a.m. Officers found the car’s owner, an unidentified 48-year-old Harwich woman, at the scene. She told police that a white male had forcibly removed her from her car. The carjacker attempted to drive away, she said, but he crashed and overturned the car in Pleasant Bay. The victim said she saw the suspect run away on foot.
