Despite above freezing temperatures, black ice is causing spinouts on highways around Greater Boston, potentially dangerous road conditions that the National Weather Service expects will persist through the Wednesday morning commute.

MassDOT has launched salting operations on state highways, including on Interstate 93 in Wilmington where several vehicles have already spun out. The worst icing condition in the Wilmington area was between Exits 41 and 44, according to MassDOT.

According to weather service, air temperatures are above freezing in many communities in Greater Boston, but that is not currently having any impact on sidewalks, driveways, roads and highways covered with a slick and glistening coat of ice.

“The problem is that the ground is frozen,’’ said Lenore Correia, a National Weather Service meteorologist. “The roadways should get better, probably around 10 a.m.”

Both MassDOT and the weather service are urging drivers to slow down Wednesday.

“Increasing westerly winds and eventual sunshine should result in improving conditions,’’ forecasters wrote. “Until then, drive with caution, take it slow, and allow extra time to reach your destination.”

The MBTA is reporting delays on the Fitchburg and Providence/Stoughton commuter rail lines, but an earlier delay on the Orange Line has ended.
