Water was gushing down Congress Street in downtown Boston on Monday, an event expected to affect the morning commute into town.

The Boston Water and Sewer Commission tweeted that either a fire hydrant pipe or a water main broke early Monday.

Congress Street from State Street northward was closed, limiting access to City Hall, Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, and other landmarks.

Delays should be expected during the morning commute, officials said.

Boston Water and Sewer officials said further updates would be posted on the agency’s Twitter account.
