What Bostonians need to know this week
Hi there Bostonians. The Patriots are playing tonight in Denver. Click here for updates on the game and continue reading below for the news you need to know this week.
What you missed over the weekend:
Friday news dump:
Colonel Richard McKeon, the head of the Massachusetts State Police, announced his retirement late Friday afternoon amid controversy surrounding the news that he ordered a state trooper to remove embarrassing information from a local judge’s daughter’s arrest report. Two state troopers are suing the state police department over the order.
Trump tweets back: After what had been a relatively “measured, disciplined and studiously scripted” trip to Asia, President Donald Trump fired away at “haters and fools,” Hillary Clinton, and Kim Jung-Un in a series of tweets Sunday. Trump also told reporters this weekend that he met with Vladimir Putin and believed his Russian counterpart was being sincere when he said his government did not try to influence the 2016 election. Former intelligence officials say Trump is being “played” by the Russian president.
SNL on CK: Saturday Night Live did not hold back on Louis C.K., after the Newton-raised comedian and former SNL writer admitted last week that the sexual misconduct allegations against him were true.
News with an impact: A CNN report on heroin addiction in Boston reunited two families with their children in the hopes of getting them to enter a treatment program.
The streak continues: The Celtics may have lost Kyrie Irving due to a facial fracture on Friday, but Boston extended their winning streak to 12 in a close one Sunday afternoon against the Toronto Raptors.
What a nice gift: Due to a flurry of donations, Boston has “practically overnight” become a global center for Dutch Golden Age masterpieces.
One lucrative ‘gram: A New Hampshire college student whose photo went viral last month has now signed with a modeling agency.
Life on the sidelines: NBC sideline reporter Michelle Tafoya talked to The Boston Globe‘s new sports podcast about what it’s like on the sidelines Sunday nights, the Patriots, and giving Kevin Garnett relationship advice. Yes, really.
What to know this week:
It’s not getting much warmer:
It appears the 70-degree weekends have finally come to an end. After a weekend of record lows, forecasters say Boston is looking at a week of temperatures in the 40s.
Cut cut cut: Congressional Republicans are hoping to pass their bill to cut/reform taxes by a self-imposed deadline of Thanksgiving, which effectively gives them this week to get the votes. Time has a good primer on what exactly needs to be done and why it may be difficult.
The long road ahead: Patriots are staying out in Colorado this week following Sunday’s game in Denver. The reason: Their next game is in Mexico City. The Globe‘s Ben Volin takes a look at what the unordinary road trip means for the team.
Giancarlo rumors continue to swirl: Trade talks between the Red Sox and the Miami Marlins for slugger Giancarlo Stanton are reportedly “heating up.” The Globe‘s Pete Abraham reports from Orlando that the Red Sox interest in Stanton is like a cloud above the MLB’s offseason GM meetings.
What’s more expensive than a drink in Boston: A liquor license in Cambridge. But not for everyone. The Globe reports on how some restaurants have gotten their licenses for free, while others have been pushed to pay up to $450,000 for theirs.
What’s happening in Boston:
Happy beerthday:
Lamplighter Brewing is celebrating the one-year anniversary of their grand opening in Cambridge with a weeklong party of sorts, beginning Tuesday with beer specials and food pop-ups and running through the weekend with two indoor biergarten blowouts.
For laughs: Former Saturday Night Live writer and acclaimed standup comedian John Mulaney will be at The Wilbur on Tuesday through Friday nights on his Kid Gorgeous tour. Mulaney, however, isn’t the only SNL alum making an appearance at The Wilbur this week. Tracy Morgan is also scheduled for a set Friday.
Truffles with Barbara Lynch: Eataly Boston is hosting a “once-in-a-lifetime truffle dinner” Wednesday with acclaimed local chef Barbara Lynch at their seafood-centric restaurant Il Pesce to benefit hurricane relief efforts. The fundraiser event also includes a televised auction.
They’re back: If you missed their concert at Fenway Park this summer, John Mayer and The Grateful Dead offshoot band Dead & Company return to Boston this weekend with shows Friday and Sunday at the TD Garden.
Catsgiving: The MSPCA is holding a cat-food drive for those feed and care for local outdoor cats Friday through Sunday at their adoption center in Boston. Those interested in supporting the cause are asked to bring donations of canned or dried cat food or order a delivery to the shelter via their Amazon wish list.
Free TED Talks: The JFK Library is hosting the second weekend of its TEDxBeaconStreet 2017 event with an all-day series of talks Saturday “organized around the values that President Kennedy championed: courage, service, innovation, and inclusion.” Registration for the event is free.
Fenway football, continued: Boston College will take on UConn at 7 p.m. Saturday in the second weekend of football games at historic baseball park.
