Puppies saved from hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico are up for adoption in Massachusetts
Eight dogs rescued from hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico have arrived in Massachusetts and will soon be ready to go to new homes, according to MSPCA Angell. The three adult dogs and five puppies, which are eight to nine weeks old, arrived in the Bay State Tuesday and are currently in quarantine at the MSPCA-Nevins Farm in Methuen. “They appear to be in good health and the puppies are playful and social,” MSPCA Angell spokesman Rob Halprin said in a statement.
Halprin described the pups as “satos,” a name he said was used for mixed-breed dogs in Puerto Rico. He said all the rescued animals will be evaluated in the coming days to address any health issues before they are adopted. The dogs will also be spayed and neutered before they go to their new homes.
Just like the cats from St. John the MSPCA took in earlier this month, the dogs were already homeless in Puerto Rico and living in a animal shelter on the island.
“Given Puerto Rico’s devastation – with communications and electricity knocked out for the majority of residents – shelter officials were desperate to re-home the animals given the expected surge in animal surrenders still to come,” he said.

The five puppies will soon be available for adoption.
Mike Keiley, director of the MSPCA’s adoption centers, expects all the dogs will be available for adoption over the weekend at the Nevins Farm location.
“We’re doing what we have always done: ensuring we are ready and able to take in animals from areas of the world badly impacted by recent extreme weather,” he said in a statement. “ We’ll do our best to ensure all of these dogs are placed in wonderful homes.”
