Chicopee gas station that sold winning Powerball ticket is donating commission to these local nonprofits
The gas station that sold the winning Powerball ticket in August has announced the local nonprofits that will receive the store’s lottery commission, according to a Tuesday statement.
Mavis Wanczyk bought the $758.7 million jackpot ticket at a Pride store in Chicopee, earning the store a $50,000 commission.
Following the big win, Pride Stores owner Bob Bolduc invited local organizations to apply for a share of the commission.
‘‘We were as surprised as everybody else. We’re happy for our customer, and we’re happy for the charities,” he said during an August news conference.
The 50 chosen nonprofits — 19 charities and 31 schools — will each receive $1,000. All recipients that were chosen “directly help kids in need,” according to the store’s statement. The groups provide a wide range of services, from sports opportunities for youth with disabilities to transitional housing for homeless mothers and children.
