Routine maintenance was behind that spectacular geyser on Boston Common

Visitors to Boston Common on Monday morning were greeted by a spectacular stream of water bursting into the air from the park’s lawn.

Gina DeNapoli, a spokeswoman for the city’s Water and Sewer Commission, said the geyser wasn’t the result of a water main break but some “routine maintenance” as workers checked for leaks in pipes.

She said the water was shut off just before 11 a.m., and a crew is on site to repair the leak. According to DeNapoli, the leak hasn’t affected any water service.

“Nobody is without water,” she said.

While city workers labored to shut off the water, others took in the sight of the rushing water and had some fun with it:
