Local animal shelters in Massachusetts are readying pets evacuated from Irma-stricken Florida for adoption. The Animal Rescue League of Boston received an emergency transport of 10 kittens on Thursday from Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in Palm Beach, said Caitlin Tomlinson, the rescue league’s associate director of shelter operations. The transport will allow that shelter to open up space to take in other hurt or abandoned animals in the wake of the storm, Tomlinson said in a blog post.

The Boston shelter has previously received animals from natural disasters, including about 20 dogs when tornadoes struck Springfield in 2011 and 40 animals during Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Second Chance Animal Shelter in North Brookfield also received 29 dogs and 78 cats displaced by Irma last week. Some of the animals came from shelters damaged by the storm, and others were moved to make room for new pets, CBS Boston reported Thursday.
