What Bostonians need to know this week
As Boston readies for college move-ins and Labor Day weekend, many thoughts are with those in Texas battling to survive the near-unimaginable effects of Hurricane Harvey.
What you missed over the weekend:
“Unprecedented”: Frightening scenes
out of the Houston area, as Harvey continues to relentlessly batter Texas. CNN reports that the storm is forecasted to drop up to 50 inches of rain on the area, which is already experiencing “catastrophic” flooding. The National Weather Services says the “breadth and intensity of this rainfall are beyond anything experienced before” and that the flooding is expected to continue for days.
At least five people have been reported dead.
Here’s a link to a vetted Harvey relief fund to provide survivors with “emergency supplies like food, water, and medicine in addition to longer-term recovery assistance to help residents recover and rebuild.”
Friday news dump: As Harvey bore down on the Texas coast, the White House made a row of controversial announcements: President Donald Trump pardoned former sheriff Joe Arpaio from a federal conviction stemming from his immigration patrols; Trump also signed a directive officially banning transgender military recruits; and White House aide Seb Gorka left his post, though whether he resigned or was fired depends on who you ask.
Next man up: Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman is expected to miss the entire 2017 season after tearing his ACL during the team’s preseason game Friday against the Detroit Lions.
Not a done deal: Following an examination of Isaiah Thomas’s injured hip, the Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly looking to renegotiate — if not rescind — their blockbuster trade sending Kyrie Irving to the Celtics. Here’s everything we know so far about the tricky situation.
Floundering Sox: The Red Sox were swept by the Orioles this weekend, mustering just four runs over three games. The four-game losing streak — tied for the team’s longest this season — has Boston just two and a half games up in the AL East. But hey, first basemen Mitch Moreland pitched Friday, which was neat.
What to know this week:
It’s the most traffic-ful time of the year:
As college students return for the fall semester, Allston Christmas — aka September 1, the pinnacle of the move-in madness — arrives Friday. The Associated Press reports that Boston is already bracing for the chaotic faux holiday. Just remember: Don’t. Take. Moving. Trucks. On. Storrow (or Memorial). Drive.
Things could get weird: Friday also kicks off the beginning of Labor Day weekend. And judging by the past Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends, those escaping to the Cape may want to heed these traffic tips. And in case you missed it, here are some of the ideas being considered to fix traffic to and from the Cape.
Marcus Morris: The assault trial of the newly acquired Celtics forward (and his twin) is set to begin Monday. Here’s an overview of the charges against them and the implications of the case.
Hmmm…: Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who says he’s not running for president, is appearing at an event Monday in New Hampshire He’s the latest among a number of national political figures to recently stop by the Granite State.
What’s happening in Boston:
September hasn’t even started and they’re already awake: Green Day is playing a show Monday night at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield. We can only hope it goes better than when the aging punk stars played the Hatch Shell in 1994.
Wootown: POW! WOW! Worcester, a citywide mural initiative and celebration, continues this week through Sunday in Massachusetts’s second biggest cities. Something to check out if you appreciate urban art.
An offer you can’t refuse: Coolidge Corner Theatre is screening The Godfather on their primary screen Monday night at 7 p.m. as part of their weekly Big Screen Classics series. And it doesn’t get much more classic than The Godfather.
More punk: Sheer Mag, “one of the fastest-rising unsigned bands” on the punk scene, are playing Thursday night at The Sinclair in Harvard Square. Advance tickets are $13.
Light up the Harbor: Boston Harbor Now and the City of Boston are teaming up for the 5th annual Illuminate the Harbor Fireworks Celebration at sunset Thursday to celebrate Labor Day weekend. The recommended viewing spots are Christopher Columbus Park in the North End, Piers Park in East Boston, and Fan Pier in the Seaport.
Jaws on D!: Celebrate the unofficial last weekend of summer next Sunday night with a Quint-essential (get it?) New England summer movie on Lawn on D’s outdoor big screen, accompanied by retro Narragansett lager cans.
