14-year-old charged with breaking into Dunkin’ Donuts

A 14-year-old boy was arrested early Tuesday morning after allegedly breaking into a Dunkin’ Donuts in Dorchester and trying to pry open an ATM inside with a yellow crowbar, Boston police said.

Officers on routine patrol in the Lower Mills neighborhood in Dorchester near the intersection of River, Washington and Dorchester Avenue around 1:55 a.m. were flagged down by a passerby who reported seeing someone shatter the glass door of the Dunkin’ Donuts.

When police arrived at 2290 Dorchester Ave., they allegedly saw the Dorchester teenager “attempting to pry open an ATM machine inside the business with a yellow crowbar in hand.’’

He ran from the building when he saw officers, but was quickly arrested, police wrote in a posting on bpdnews.com.

The teenager has been arraigned in Dorchester Juvenile Court as a delinquent on charges of breaking and entering of a building, willful and malicious destruction of property, and possession of burglarious tools, police said.

“I find it troubling that we have a young suspect in this case who is out so late committing a very serious property crime,’’ Commissioner William B. Evans said in a statement. “A kid this age should be getting ready for back to school instead of going to court. I hope this serves as a wake-up call for him and that he’s able to start making choices that will help him turn things around.’’
