What Bostonians need to know this week
We’re catching you up on a disheartening weekend nationally, with a focus on local events you might be into.
What you missed over the weekend:
Heather Heyer:
One person was killed by a car that plowed into a crowd of peaceful demonstrators, as white nationalists and other counter-protesters violently clashed Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia. Two others were killed when a state police helicopter patrolling the rally crashed nearby.
Trump’s response: As elected officials across the political spectrum denounced white nationalism, President Donald Trump’s initial condemnation of violence on “many sides” was criticized by political leaders, both nationally and in Massachusetts. Trump released an updated statement Sunday specifically condemning extremist group, including the white nationalists and neo-Nazis.
Warren at Netroots: Elizabeth Warren received chants encouraging her to run for president in 2020 at a progressive summit in Atlanta, after she gave a speech ridiculing the “so-called Democratic strategists” who want to see the party move back toward the political center.
Little League: New England’s representative in Williamsport is… Fairfield, Connecticut, again. Big Daddy Hacks, we hardly knew ye.
The coolest shark video you’ll watch this week: Hap Farrell — an Orleans charter captain and owner of one impressively New England name — says it’s not uncommon to see great white sharks during his fishing trips off Cape Cod. But this one was something else.
What to know this week:
Look up
: Clear skies Sunday night could provide for good meteor shower viewing.
In other weather news: The Farmer’s Almanac, which has a mixed history of recent hits and misses, is predicting a relatively cold and snowy winter for the Northeast.
Charlottesville to Boston: Following the violence in Charlottesville, local political and law enforcement leaders are bracing for a “free speech” rally planned for the Boston Common this coming Saturday. Local organizers say they have no association to the group behind the Charlottesville rally, though a previous rally on the Common organized by the group looked awfully similar. More than a thousand people have already RSVPed for a counter-protest.
About those fires: In the wake of a few notable blazes, The Boston Globe reports that the majority of Greater Boston communities do not require developers to submit recommended written fire prevention plans.
What’s happening in Boston:
45 isn’t that old:
Pedro Martinez — yes, that Pedro Martinez — is pitching in a charity “oldtime” game Thursday in Cambridge. The game is free to attend, which seems like a good deal to see a Hall of Famer pitch.
Consider the lobster: The New England Aquarium is hosting a kid-friendly interactive event on your favorite crustacean Thursday night at the Boston Public Library.
The Perceptionists: “Two of Boston’s greatest rappers” are returning for a release show Thursday night at The Middle East in Cambridge.
Also Thursday: The Revivalists, who you likely know for their recent hit “Wish I Knew You,” are playing a free show Thursday at 5 p.m in Copley Square. Free!
Margaritafield: Jimmy Buffet and the Coral Reefer Band are playing Saturday night at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield.
