What Bostonians need to know this week
In case you missed the news while you were outside melting, here’s everything you need to prepare for the week ahead.
What you missed over the weekend
High heat:
For those who complained about the dreary, mild weather over the past few weeks, be careful what you wish for. Highs across Massachusetts reached into the 90s on Sunday, which was only day one of a potential three-day heat wave.
Boston Pride: From Fenway to Southie to the Common, Boston celebrated LGBT Pride Month this weekend. The 47th edition of the annual downtown Pride Parade included several local elected officials, as well as 29 survivors from last year’s Orlando nightclub mass shooting. Here’s a video of Elizabeth Warren during the parade, running and dancing through the streets in a rainbow boa.
Important read: In a lengthy investigative report, The Boston Globe revealed how a highly profitable hospital chain for mentally ill children and adults prospered in Massachusetts while “repeatedly and sometimes egregiously shortchanging patient care.”
Fun read: The Globe‘s Billy Baker hilariously tackled the laundry struggles in the famous fishing port of Gloucester, where the pungent fish smell is really hard to escape. “Laundry can get you divorced in this town,” said one fishing captain.
What’s happening in Boston this week
The scorching heat isn’t going away quite yet, and Monday could be even worse than Sunday. As the Globe reports, highs will be in the mid 90s on Monday and the low 90s on Tuesday before dropping down into the 70s by Wednesday. On a related note, Boston.com’s Nicole Yang just did a deep dive into 10 of the Boston area’s top ice cream spots.
A different perspective on a local epidemic: The Boston Atheneum is hosting an event Tuesday at noon on the literary history of the opioid crisis. Boston University professor Susan L. Mizruchi will discuss how iconic authors like Ernest Hemingway and David Foster Wallace have provided insight into addiction through their most famous works.
Reliving the rivalry: Remember when the NBA’s super-teams were in Boston and Los Angeles? ESPN does. And the network’s five-hour 30 for 30 documentary on the storied Celtics-Lakers rivalry will air this week — the first half at 8 p.m. Tuesday, and the second-half at the same time Wednesday. The film features interviews with all the key players (Bird, McHale, Magic, Kareem, you name it), classic footage dating back to Bill Russell’s Celtics, and, as promised, Donnie Wahlberg as co-narrator.
A familiar voice: In case the Celtics-Lakers documentary doesn’t satiate your appetite for sports nostalgia, the week will end with a blast from the more recent past. On Saturday night, former longtime NESN announcer Don Orsillo will call the Red Sox game against the Astros in Houston for Fox Sports. Orsillo, who does play-by-plays for the San Diego Padres, called his last Red Sox game in 2015.
While the Red Sox are away…: Dead & Company, a band of former Grateful Dead members, as well as John Mayer in the late Jerry Garcia’s role, will take over Fenway Park this weekend. Tickets are still available for the Saturday and Sunday concerts. More info here.
