“This mouse was no quitter.”

A Maine police officer and his wife witnessed “an epic battle” of wills when a field mouse made its way into their rental home, coming face-to-face with their cat, Lulu.

The Bangor Police Department shared the story of the encounter on Facebook Friday.

According Sergeant Tim Cotton, who runs the department’s page, Sergeant Wade Betters woke up to find a standoff between his cat and the mouse in his living room:

This was an outdoor mouse sturdy in spirit. Probably a mouse who understood the slogan “If you can’t stand the winter, you don’t deserve the summer.” A genuine Maine Field Mouse who had built up his wind by avoiding foxes, hawks, and other neighborhood cats. This mouse was no quitter.

When Betters tried to catch the mouse, it scampered out of sight. But later in the morning, according to Cotton, his wife spotted the mouse sending a message to their cat that “the game was not over,” and captured an incredible photo of the encounter.

Cotton wrote that he hopes everyone, like the “mighty, Maine Field Mouse,” can find their own inner fortitude, adding the hashtag #bethemouse on the post.

“Never quit, look your opponent in the eye, and cross your fingers that if the screen doesn’t hold, you still have the energy to run like the wind,” he said.
