Reading condo fire reaches up to 7 alarms; more than 60 displaced
READING — A massive fire tore through a condominium building here Thursday afternoon, displacing more than 60 residents and sending one firefighter to a hospital with minor injuries, officials said.
“Up to seven” alarms were struck to battle the blaze at the Old Reading Schoolhouse Condos building on Sanborn Street, which broke out just after 1:15 p.m., said Fire Chief Gregory Burns during an evening briefing at the scene.
As Burns spoke, smoke continued wafting from the roof of the four-story red-brick building, a converted schoolhouse that was built at the turn of the last century and renovated in the 1980s.
Burns said firefighters encountered smoky conditions on the fourth floor when they arrived, and the fire quickly spread.
