What Bostonians need to know this week
Lots of action in Boston this weekend, plus Trump's reported climate change decision and the JFK Centennial.
For those commemorating the unofficial start of summer this weekend, no excuse is needed for falling behind on all the local news and events. But despite — of perhaps because of — the three-day weekend and at-times sunny weather, the action did not subside.
Here’s a quick Boston-centric catch-up, with a preview of what’s on tap for the shortened week and event-filled Memorial Day.
What you missed over the weekend
- Boston Calling: The annual music festival looked a lot different this year at its new location. And despite the lines, the acts onstage were reportedly impressive. Check out the photos here.
- Red Sox snap six-game winning streak: The Red Sox received three stellar performances from their starting pitchers this weekend, but only came out with two wins to show for it. The team lost to the Mariners on Sunday, snapping their longest win streak of the 2017 season. They did, however, rack up two wins courtesy of Eduardo Rodriguez and Brian Johnson, the latter of which got blasted with Powerade.
- Trump team on defense: Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, a Boston native, defended reports that President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner proposed a secret communications channel with the Russian government. “‘It’s normal in my opinion and acceptable,” Kelly told ABC News (via The Boston Globe). Meanwhile, Trump signaled his return back to the United States with a Twitter rant Sunday blasting anonymous sources and the media.
- Trump reportedly intends to leave global climate pact: Axios reported Saturday that Trump has privately decided to withdraw the United States from the international Paris Agreement to address climate change. The Associated Press has a grim report on what that decision would spell for the planet.
- Run to Remember: Runners from across the country gathered Sunday in Boston for a unique race honoring first responders.
- Elizabeth Warren’s embrace of Dunkin’ Donuts continues: She revealed her favorite order Sunday with a reference to a classic cartoon.
What’s happening in Boston this week
- JFK Centennial: Coinciding with Memorial Day on Monday is President John F. Kennedy’s 100 birthday. Kennedy’s birthplace in Brookline is commemorating the landmark birthday with all-day celebrations featuring former Gov. Michael Dukakis, Rep. Joe Kennedy III, and cake. The JFK Library in Columbia Point is also planning a big celebration Monday, including performances, a Navy flyover, and, yes, more cake.
- Maryland goes for the double at Gillette: The NCAA men’s lacrosse championship also takes place Monday in Foxborough. Maryland won the women’s championship Sunday, and their men’s team is also in the finals Monday against Ohio State. The 1 p.m. game will be televised live from Gillette Stadium on ESPN2.
- Price is back: Despite two iffy rehab starts at Pawtucket, Red Sox pitcher David Price is set to make his 2017 debut Monday in the team’s 2 p.m. game at Fenway Park. The lefty has been sidelined due to a nagging elbow injury.
- More sports: While Boston’s teams may be out of it, the beginning of the end of the NBA and NHL playoffs start this week. The Nashville Predators take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals Monday night, while the NBA Finals three-match between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers doesn’t begin until Thursday.
