Legoland will name giant giraffe ‘Gio’ after 6-year-old Medford boy who died
It looks like a Medford family will get their wish, after all.
Legoland Discovery Center Boston said this week that it will rename the 20-foot-tall giraffe model outside of its headquarters at Somerville’s Assembly Row after Gio Maggiore, the six-year-old boy who died earlier this year from a congenital heart disease.
“Tessie,” which is made of 22,000 Lego Duplo bricks and was erected in 2014, will get its new moniker during a ceremony on Wednesday, May 31. The event will include a “special” surprise, according to Legoland.
The announcement comes just weeks after the Maggiores lost a bid to have a newborn giraffe at Animal Adventure Park in New York named after their son.
