NH police rescue bear cubs too weak to keep up with their mother

Police in New Hampshire rescued two bear cubs this week that were too small and weak to keep up with their mother and siblings, according to authorities.

Officers from the Carroll Police Department and New Hampshire State Police were responding to perform “bear traffic control” near Bretton Woods ski resort Thursday when they saw one of the four cubs wasn’t able to run and keep up with the rest of its family, according to the departments.

After speaking with New Hampshire Fish and Game officials, the officers on scene took the weak cub to a rehabilitation center in Lyme.

Carroll police said another cub from the same litter was picked up Wednesday out of similar concern.

“This leaves her with three other very healthy cubs that she can now focus on and take care of,” the department said of the mother bear.

Both law enforcement agencies warned that the public should never pick up or touch wild animals.

“Please use this as a reminder to keep bears wild and not feed them human food or from your vehicle (even if they are adorable),” state police said.
