Giraffe won’t be named after Medford boy

The giraffe born in a New York adventure park won’t be named after Gio Maggiore, a Medford boy who fell in love with giraffes during a brief life cut short by a congenital heart condition.

His family — and the Medford community at large — had campaigned for the name of the six-year-old boy to be chosen as the moniker for the male giraffe born at the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, NY on April 15.
