Chafee re-emerges to criticize successor Raimondo
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is re-inserting his voice into state politics with an open letter criticizing his successor, Gov. Gina Raimondo, a fellow Democrat.
The former Democratic presidential candidate and one-term governor sent a letter to the state’s economic development agency ahead of a Monday meeting. In the letter obtained by WPRI-TV , Chafee advises them to “redirect” millions of dollars that Raimondo wants to spend on business incentives for a new technology complex in Providence.
Chafee says that money could be spent lowering state college tuitions, cutting car taxes or eliminating truck tolls.
An agency spokesman says they’re focused on creating jobs.
Chafee has been saying for months he would not rule out another run for governor, leading to speculation he could run against Raimondo in 2018.
