The model, which was built by Chinese manufacturing company China Railway Rolling Stock Corp, is approximately two-thirds the size of an actual MBTA train. It was shipped in from China in early January.
In 2014, the Chinese company won a bid with the state Department of Transportation to produce 284 new MBTA cars–152 for the Orange Line and 132 for the Red Line. All of the cars are expected to make their way to Boston by 2022.
Gov. Charlie Baker has already expressed his approval of the new train, which boasts orange plastic seats and more spacious cars, according to Boston Magazine. Baker, along with several top MBTA officials, toured the mockup at Wellington Station last week.
