Police rescued an injured bald eagle in Bernardston

The Bernardston Police Department rescued an injured bald eagle near Brattleboro Road on Sunday afternoon.

Officer Dan Larvey received a call about the animal around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to a Facebook post from the police department. With the help of the department’s animal control officer, Art Johnson, Larvey was able to rescue the injured bird and bring it to a raptor specialist for medical treatment.

The bird, an adult male, likely suffered muscle or nerve damage in one of its wings, MassLive reports. It also appeared to be underweight and dehydrated, and is believed to have been injured for several weeks prior to its rescue. The animal may have been injured by flying into a power line.

A veterinarian found that the eagle’s wing was not fractured, and officials believe the animal has around a 50/50 chance of flying again and being released back into the wild.
