Former Globe editor Marty Baron is returning to Boston to talk about journalism and democracy
Former Boston Globe editor Marty Baron is returning to Boston.
Baron, who currently serves as the Washington Post’s executive editor, will speak at a Tufts Medical Center benefit event Tuesday, where he will accept the 2017 Ellen M. Zane Award for Visionary Leadership. The gala will be held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.
“Marty Baron is one of the nation’s top newsroom leaders, a courageous seeker of truth and a true visionary in an industry that is undergoing disruptive transformation,” Michael Wagner, President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center, said in a release.
Baron will discuss how journalism – and, specifically, the Washington Post – aid in ensuring a healthy democracy, Boston Magazine reports.
In his 11 years as editor of the Globe, Baron garnered six Pulitzers, one for the newspaper’s investigation into the decades-long cover-up of sexual abuse by members of the Catholic clergy in Boston. This investigation was the topic of the movie Spotlight, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture last year. Baron was portrayed by Liev Schreiber in the film.
The Post has won four Pulitzer Prizes since his tenure began in 2013. Prior to his time at the Globe and the Post, Baron held top positions at The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and The Miami Herald.
