Parts of the Greater Boston area could see up to 18 inches of snow Tuesday, prompting businesses, libraries, and other institutions around the region to close due to the weather.

State and weather officials are urging people to stay off the roads if they can, and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced Monday the city’s public schools and libraries would be closed. Cambridge also closed its public schools and libraries.

Universities across the region, including Boston University, Harvard, and MIT will be shut down.

The MBTA is planning to run on a normal schedule, but bike share system Hubway announced it would be shut down due to the snow. Massachusetts RMV offices will also be closed.

Museums across Boston and Cambridge closed their doors, too.

Thinking you’ll head out for a bite, do some shopping, or enjoy the weather with a winter activity like ice skating? You should still plan ahead. The snow is affecting operating hours for some food vendors and restaurants, and prompting some businesses to shut down for the day.
