After calamitous fire, Warwick is grief-stricken

An overnight blaze that left a mother and four children dead on Saturday was “maybe the worst tragedy” in the small town’s recent history, said the Rev. Dr. Gordon Ellis who struggled to find the right words during Sunday’s service at Metcalf Church.

“You can’t live in a little town like Warwick without being moved by the shock, the grief, of it all,” said Ellis.

 Dozens of parishioners sat in pews wearing winter jackets as space heaters hummed near their feet. The cold was a “tiny fraction” of the below-freezing temperatures the first responders experienced a day prior, Ellis said.
