KKK flyers in Maine communities prompt concern for refugees

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Residents of three Maine communities say they found Ku Klux Klan fliers that were purporting to be about a neighborhood watch on places like driveways and porches.

The Kennebec Journal reports the fliers were found in Augusta, Gardiner and Freeport. The fliers found in Augusta say they are from “Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.”

Augusta Police Chief Robert Gregoire says residents reported finding the flyers on Monday.

Some of the fliers were left in Augusta’s Sand Hill neighborhood. The Rev. Francis Morin, administrator of a parish that includes a church in the neighborhood, says the KKK does not speak for Christians. He says he believes the fliers were left there because refugees live in the neighborhood.

Republican Gov. Paul LePage called the fliers “appalling.”
