Inmates refuse to return to cells at Shirley prison, but officers regain control

An inmate disturbance at a maximum security prison in Shirley on Monday forced some corrections officers to withdraw briefly from a housing unit before staff regained control of the area, authorities said.

David Procopio, a State Police spokesman, confirmed in an email shortly before 7 p.m. that State Police deployed “numerous units” to a site outside the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, and that the troopers were “prepared to assist if needed.”
