Massachusetts school districts shut down, open late due to bitter cold

It was 4 degrees in Boston on Friday morning, causing some school districts to close and others to open late.

Districts that closed down due to the bitter cold weather included Lowell, Lawrence, Medford, and Worcester. Districts opening late include Framingham, Dracut, and Acton-Boxborough.

The National Weather Service posted a wind chill advisory for western, central, southeast, and interior northeast Massachusetts until 9 a.m., warning of “dangerously cold wind chills” dropping as low as 15 below zero on Friday. A wind chill advisory is posted when wind chills of between -15 to -24 degrees are likely for at least 3 hours.

“Outdoor exposure should be limited,” according to the advisory.

Wind chills below -20 degrees can cause frostbite in 30 minutes, according to the National Weather Service.

The Lowell Public Schools website also posted information about a “warming center” set up in the city. The warming center, at 276 Broadway St., will be open to people who need relief from the cold until 6 p.m.
