$1.4 million Sudbury home destroyed by fire in extreme cold

A $1.4 million home in Sudbury looked like a dystopian winter wonderland Friday after it was destroyed by a three-alarm fire in sub-zero temperatures.

The house was so far away from the street that firefighters had to stretch the fire hose down the driveway.

Firefighters spent more than 12 hours fighting the fire in high winds and the bitter cold, the Sudbury Fire Department said. The blaze began Thursday at 2 p.m. and was finally extinguished Friday at 2:30 a.m.

Firefighters snaked nearly 2,000 feet of hose down a driveway to get access to the home, which was about a half-mile from the road, making it difficult to combat the fire.

No one was seriously injured in the blaze, though the single-family home was declared a total loss, the fire department said.

By Friday morning, when temperatures were in the single digits, the lawn, trees, and exterior of the house were covered in a layer of ice.

The roof of the home was completely destroyed.

Firefighters from five communities responded to the fire on Brimstone Lane. Sudbury officials and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating what sparked it.

“This was a complex firefighting operation, made difficult by the weather conditions, narrow roadway, and long driveway,” Sudbury Fire Chief William Miles said in the statement. “What is most important is that no one was seriously injured. I am very grateful to our firefighters and our neighboring departments for battling the elements and working together to fight this large fire.”
