Boston and Nova Scotia leaders to host Christmas tree lighting Thursday on the Common
Also, there will be some classic '90s hip hop.
Boston’s 2016 Christmas tree made it to the Common earlier this month, after a long journey down from the outer reaches of Nova Scotia.
The next step in the annual celebration of seasonal cheer and international relations is Thursday’s tree lighting.
Mayor Marty Walsh will be joined by Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil to host the 75th annual tree lighting, which is scheduled to run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., according to the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. WCVB will broadcast the event live, starting at 7 p.m.
The show will include Canadian “Mounties,” Santa Claus, and a pyrotechnics display—presumably similar to last year.
The tree-lighting event will also feature the Nova Scotian band, The Town Heroes; country singer Timmy Brown; the cast of Bill Hanney’s North Shore Music Theatre’s A Christmas Carol; and, the headliner, Boston-based ’90s hip-hop group Bell Biv DeVoe.
There will also be snacks provided by Dunkin’ Donuts and other promotional sponsors. The L.L. Bean Bootmobile is also said to be making an appearance.
According to a previous Parks and Recreation release, the tree will be lit precisely at 7:55 p.m.
Every year since 1971, Nova Scotia has donated a Christmas tree to Boston as a token of gratitude for the city’s response to the 1917 Halifax Explosion. This year’s tree was the first to come from Cape Breton, the scenic north-easternmost region of Nova Scotia.
